All About Barretso: Disco Ain’t Dead

March 17, 2010 at 2:19 am (Uncategorized)

Staying on top of all things current, a new talent for you to keep your eyes on is Francisco Barretso, an up and coming producer from Chile with some wicked house tracks slightly reminiscent of Russ Chimes. Not much is known about him outside of his origins and the fact that he’s already signed to Australian label Tuff ‘Em Up, but I am confident in saying that he definitely understands his craft. With intricately layered melodies, on top of hard hitting beats as well as providing his own vocals, Barretso gives us a taste of the kind of heat emanating from South America.

Be on the lookout for his debut album called Bright City Lights coming to a music store near you!!!

And as an added bonus, I’ll leave you with the awesome track “Midnight Walk”, enjoy!

I’ve returned from the ashes :-P

March 14, 2010 at 12:14 am (Uncategorized)

So as I understand, it’s been some time since I’ve posted anything remotely new, on, or popping up in here so I think I should turn your attention to this. One of my most favorite bands in history, J*DaVeY has dropped a video from their most recent EP: Boudoir Synema: The Great Misstape. And may I say, this video is pretty trippy in regards to the sexy man with the fox face. Outside of that, I think it could have been better but my knowledge is better geared towards music and not music video production.

Either way, if you still haven’t copped Boudoir Synema, then this is the link for you! http://jdavey.bandcamp.com/

Check out the video and post your thoughts if you dare 😛

Happy rainy chilly Saturday folks

Just wanted to take some time out…

February 27, 2010 at 3:43 pm (Uncategorized)

to say peace to all those in Chile who have just endured a major earthquake of their own. I sincerely hope things are not as dire as they appear and that the country will be able to rebuild soon.

Peace and light to those who have lost loved ones as well… 😦

The Best New Pop Artist You’ve Never Heard: M$ney

February 26, 2010 at 12:49 am (Uncategorized)

After a ho-hum week full of small injuries, dreadful weather, and killer whales striking back,  I’m trying to put you on to the next big thing in pop music :).  Her name is M$ney. Yes, her name is rather unimaginative and could be interpreted as indicative of the music culture we currently live in where greed/capitalism is glorified (something that definitely doesn’t work for our country’s current economic situation)but her music is cold, accessible, and rather catchy.

M$ney made her debut in 2008 off the Timbaland album Shockvalue with the song “Fantasy”, a sugary sweet track heavily laced with synths and an airy beat which surprisingly (not), had loads of commercial appeal. It also exhibited a great deal of potential for the young miss M$ney.

Since then, between teasing snippets of songs like “Check that Bitch” and full-fledged tracks like her first single “Future”, M$ney is definitely someone to keep your eyes out for. I can only hope that she stops pussyfooting around and actually releases some more current material.

Check out some of her songs on her MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/moneymusicinfo

These Are Powers… A Journey Into Sound?

February 21, 2010 at 12:28 am (Reviews)

With a cover full of bright and bold liquids entirely concealing an anonymous individual in an ode to the sexual fetish sploshing (google it!) These Are Powers have kicked off a new EP called Candyman/World Class Peoples in a similar fashion. Since 2007 with three albums under their collective belt, these guys have been known for their brash house/hip-hop beats, free-form catchy tunes, and more simply, organized chaos.

They maintain their cacophony style as Powers continues to think outside of the box and maybe even the known universe with World Class Peoples a synthy, hypnotic track complete with singer/guitarist Ana Barie’s sultry screech layered upon sub bass kicks and undulating guitar riffs. The hits keep on coming with Candyman, a track reminiscent of Eastern sounds mixed with a jerky beat and an oh so coy naughty nursery rhyme. Other tracks include Gutterspaces, and a few remixes to the above mentioned tracks but overall prove without a doubt that Powers is definitely on the forefront of Brooklyn’s noise rock scene.

If you’re in NYC, you can check them out tonight at Greenpoint’s CoCo66 along with Blondes and Fixed DJ’s. Rumor has it, there’s an open bar as well. 🙂

An experimental music group from Brooklyn and Chicago, These Are Powers is composed of Ana Barie on vocals and guitar, Pat Noecker on bass, and Bill Salas on drums/percussion.

Childish Gambino: I Am Just a Rapper 1 & 2

February 16, 2010 at 10:41 pm (Reviews)

Mixtape by Childish Gambino

I do not talk. I am just a rapper.

With these two simple sentences and a screeching guitar, Childish Gambino proceeds to go in on these mixtapes with witty verse, simple concepts, and a hunger that can’t be denied. Coupling his biting rhymes with tunes from indie bands such as Sleigh Bells, Discovery, Neon Indian, and The Very Best, he’s definitely putting his own stamp on the music scene.

You may know Childish Gambino by his other name as actor, writer, and comedian Donald Glover of Derrick Comedy, Mystery Team, and Community
fame. A true Renaissance man, Mr. Glover is exhibiting all of his talents especially in this album, where his comedic nuances enhance some of the more serious topics he focuses on .

Though these mixtapes are not his first effort, with  albums like Sick Boi  and Pointdexter released only months before, Childish Gambino steadily and consistently keeps dropping hits in an almost Drake-like fashion. Tracks that shine on this album include “My Girls”, “I Love Clothes”, “Different” which also features his Derrick Comedy colleague D.C. Pierson, and “Both Hands”.

Some have disparaged Gambino’s choice of using full songs as the backing of his rhymes from merely a production aspect but I think it works. His rhymes are raw and catchy and sync up nearly perfect with most  tracks. Sure there are some hit or miss but he’s a fledgling so we can let it slip. Either way, Gambino is definitely someone you should keep your eye on, especially come spring when his next album “The Culdesac” is slated to drop.

If you don’t believe me download them, they’re free:

Oh! And definitely check out bonus track, “Turd in the Oven” with melody provided by Vampire Weekend…

So this is my first blog entry…

February 15, 2010 at 8:24 pm (Uncategorized)

I guess I could preface this with a quick hello and random unimportant facts about myself but I’d rather state my intentions for this blog and keep it moving…

  • I’m a Brooklyn girl with mad love in my heart for this borough, this site will definitely have posts about that…
  • I love music, this blog’ll have reviews about whatever new sounds I find interesting, trippy, cool enough to dedicate time to posting about it…
  • I love writing, so I may get verbose with it sometimes…

let’s do this… 🙂

happy reading
